This week’s video essay concludes our October Halloween celebration of horror with an underrated contribution to the world of a found footage horror (this is one for the fans of Man Bites Dog!), Adrian Țofei’s brilliantly thoughtful Be My Cat: A Film For Anne! As an obsessed fan of Anne Hathaway films a video diary with the intent of persuading the Oscar winner to travel to Romania to star within his film, it is gradually revealed that this man has ulterior motives which includes stalking, possession, and abduction. Filming rehearsals with three actresses, the protagonist demonstrates his adoration towards Anne Hathaway via violent acts. Disturbing for its intense believability, realism, and psychological examination of a character reliant on parasocial relationships, Be My Cat: A Film For Anne dissects how uncomfortably close we can become to the media we consume.
