(15 May 2015) THERON VS HAYEK: BATTLE OF THE CANNES RED CARPET
Salma Hayek and Charlize Theron nearly bumped into each other on the red carpet in Cannes this evening as Hayek attended the premiere of her latest movie, fantasy portmanteau “Tale of Tales.”
Theron left the earlier premiere of “Mad Max: Fury Road” only to be mobbed by photographers, preparing for the arrival of Hayek for the evening’s late premiere.
The South African actress and her fianc, Sean Penn, battled their way down the red carpet to their car before the appearance of Hayek and her co-stars John C Reilly, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and director Matteo Garrone.
“Tale of Tales,” is one of 19 films competing for the Palme d’Or – the festival’s top prize. It is split into three stories based on the folk myths of 16th century Italian writer Giambattista Basile. Hayek plays the queen of Selvascura who, in her desperation to have a child, follows the advice of a soothsayer and, after eating the heart of a sea monster becomes pregnant and gives birth to an albino son all within a single day. American actor Reilly plays her husband tasked with sourcing said heart.
Elsewhere, in nearby Roccaforte, a sex-addicted king (Cassel) becomes obsessed with the singing voice of one of his subjects, unaware that the object of his affection is a withered old hag. After the old lady tricks her way into her monarch’s bed under the cover of darkness, she is thrown from the castle window, before transforming into a beautiful young maiden and returning to claim his hand in marriage.
Finally, in Altomonte, an eccentric king (Brit Toby Jones) nurtures a small flea until it grows to a giant size. When his beloved pet dies, he promises to hand over his daughter to any suitor who can identify its skinned hide. Unfortunately for the princess, she’s forced to head off into the mountains with an ogre who correctly guesses which animal the skin was taken from.
The Cannes Film Festival runs until 23 May.
