Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker was released in 2019, and featured the classic Batman villain (played by Joaquin Phoenix) in a serious, psychological thriller film. A new kind of origin story for DC, Joker followed struggling comedian Arthur Fleck as he descended into severe mental illness, and ultimately becomes a murderous criminal. The film grossed $1.074 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. Though Joker was intended to be a standalone film, but the movie’s success lead to a sequel being announced in May 2021. It was revealed in June 2022 that the sequel film would be titled Joker: Folie à Deux. In an interview with Variety, Joker’s Hildur Guðnadóttir offered a Joker: Folie à Deux production update. The Oscar-winning composer of the 2019 film revealed that she has just started working on the music set to be included in the musical sequel. Though it was confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux would be a musical, Guðnadóttir did not give away whether she is working on the incidental score, or if she is involved with writing the film’s musical numbers.
